✨ The part I may not have told you yet...

Hi Reader! πŸ’—

You've been getting these emails from me for a while now or maybe you are new (we have a lot of new faces around here, welcome!!!) and I realized recently that I may have never actually introduced myself to you.

Not really. Not the part that matters.

So today is that - here goes! A proper introduction. πŸ’—

I want to tell you why I do this work.

I lost my mom to cancer when I was 29.

There's a particular kind of unmaking that happens when you lose your mother young.

The world you understood - that you'd built quietly, assuming she'd be in it for the parts that mattered comes apart in your hands. And in the after, something happens to a lot of us that nobody warns you about: you start questioning everrrrryyyything.

Not in a conspiracy-theory way.

In a how did she get cancer? way. A what was she exposed to that I'm still being exposed to way. In a what's in this, what's in that, what have I been using on my body every single day without ever once reading the back of the bottle way.

How can I keep something like this from happening to me? My own health, risk, mortality, etc. suddenly became front and center.

I became - and I'm being honest here - a little obsessed. 😬

I read ingredient lists in Target like other people read novels. I downloaded the apps. I went down rabbit holes about things I'd never heard of two months earlier. I spent more money than I should have on products that promised to be "clean" and turned out to be just as bad as what I was replacing.

It honestly wasn't all that healthy in the beginning. I realize that now looking back.

BUT (silver lining, right?!) somewhere in the middle of all of that, two things happened. πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»

The first is that I started to find products that genuinely felt different - formulated with care, transparent about what was in them, made by people who'd done the homework I was now trying to do.

The second is that I realized how little we know about environmental exposures.

How most women would never have the bandwidth I did to spend years sorting through it.

How the system was set up to make a real answer almost impossible to find.

That's when this work - the blog, this newsletter, this whole thing - became what it is. πŸ’—πŸ’—πŸ’—

Because I'd done the research, and there was no way I was going to keep it to myself.

I think about my mom most days. I think about whether any of the products she used contributed to what happened to her.

I'll never know. Nobody will. But I do know that I have a choice about what I use, and what I tell the women I care about, and what kind of work I'm willing to do to make sure the answer is a little easier for someone else than it was for me.

That's the actual reason I'm here.

Thank you for being here. Truly. πŸ’—

XO,

Sarah

Let's walk through it as if we were chatting in my kitchen over a cup of coffee, shall we?! β˜•πŸ’— I've been keeping it SUPER simple lately because it's hotttt and I'm sweaty but my face is still DRY, go figure?! 🀣 Step 1: Silky Skin Cleanser (Counter) This is where I stopped stripping my skin. For years I used cleansers that left my...

Hi Reader! πŸ’— Last week we talked about the SSS (Summer skin slump) 🀣 That mirror moment, the dullness, the fine lines that seem new, the tired look that isn't tiredness. This week I want to talk about why most of us can't fix it. Here's the pattern I've seen a hundred times, from women in the community, from friends, from myself years ago. You notice something about your skin. You research. You find a product that promises to address it. You buy it. You use it for a month, maybe two. You feel...

Hi Reader! πŸ’— I had this moment in the bathroom last Tuesday morning. I was leaning toward the mirror to put in an earring, and I caught my reflection under that particular slice of morning light that shows you everrrrrrrything. 🫣🫣🫣 I stood there for a second and thought - hmm, when did my skin start looking like this? Not older. Not bad. Just… tired. Flat. Like it wasn't quite awake, even though I was. It was the first time I really LOOKED at my skin in awhile, like actually looked closely!...
