✨ Why the "right product" might not be fixing what bothers you

Hi Reader! πŸ’—

Last week we talked about the SSS (Summer skin slump) 🀣

That mirror moment, the dullness, the fine lines that seem new, the tired look that isn't tiredness.

This week I want to talk about why most of us can't fix it.

Here's the pattern I've seen a hundred times, from women in the community, from friends, from myself years ago.

You notice something about your skin. You research. You find a product that promises to address it. You buy it. You use it for a month, maybe two.

You feel underwhelmed.

You wonder if the product is a scam, or if your skin is just broken, or if you're aging faster than everyone else (you aren't!!)

Then you find the next product, and the cycle repeats.

I want to be honest with you: it's not the product.

The reason most skincare disappointment happens is that we've been sold a version of skincare where individual products do the heavy lifting. The miracle serum. The transformative moisturizer. The one thing that changes everything. And that framing is doing a massive disservice to how skin actually works.

Skin doesn't respond to one specific hero product (unless maybe Vitamin C! but....I digress! 🀣).

Skin responds to a system.

Here's what I mean by that. Every skincare routine, whether you know it or not, is really doing three jobs:

Cleanse. Removing what shouldn't be there without stripping what should be.

Sweat, sunscreen, buildup, environmental particles.

A wrong cleanser undoes everything you're about to do next. A right one sets everything up.

Treat. Addresses the specific thing you actually want to change.

This is where serums live - vitamin C for brightness and dullness and hyaluronic acid for hydration, etc..

This is the "targeted action" step. It's the one most women get most excited about because it's where the visible change happens.

But, and this is the part most people miss, a serum can only do about 40% of its job if the cleanse before it stripped your barrier, and can only lock in about 60% of what it did if the moisturizer after it doesn't seal it in.

Moisturize. Seal in what you just did. Support the barrier so your skin can actually use the ingredients you delivered. This is the step most women under-invest in because it seems boring. It isn't. A moisturizer is the reason your serum's work actually shows up in your face.

You need all three and really ONLY NEED these three.

You don't need a 79 step skincare routine. 3-5 steps MAX will do the job.

Here's the reframe I want you to walk away with today: stop looking for the miracle product.

Start looking for the right system.

Once you have a system, three products that actually work together, you can add and swap and refine over time.

Next week, I'm going to show you the actual three-step system I use every morning! πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌ

Hi Reader! πŸ’— I had this moment in the bathroom last Tuesday morning. I was leaning toward the mirror to put in an earring, and I caught my reflection under that particular slice of morning light that shows you everrrrrrrything. 🫣🫣🫣 I stood there for a second and thought - hmm, when did my skin start looking like this? Not older. Not bad. Just… tired. Flat. Like it wasn't quite awake, even though I was. It was the first time I really LOOKED at my skin in awhile, like actually looked closely!...

Hi Reader! πŸ’— You've been getting these emails from me for a while now or maybe you are new (we have a lot of new faces around here, welcome!!!) and I realized recently that I may have never actually introduced myself to you. Not really. Not the part that matters. So today is that - here goes! A proper introduction. πŸ’— I want to tell you why I do this work. I lost my mom to cancer when I was 29. There's a particular kind of unmaking that happens when you lose your mother young. The world you...
